Day 41 of Lent
Monday in Holy Week, Mar. 17, 2008

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:5-11

To think about:

Imagine the huge scope this passage pictures for us. From the heights to the depths. Jesus had everything - all the power and glory of the universe. And what did he do with it? He took on the form of a slave and died on the cross! Certainly that was humility at its greatest. But the text doesn't end there. For not only did Jesus die on the cross, but he was raised again. From humility to exaltation. From slave to master.

But let's go back to the beginning of this text. "Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus…Christ humbled himself and was obedient to the point of death." Can we do that? Of course not. That is asking too much! But thanks be to God, it has been done for us, and we and all creation must come on bended knee to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

To pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, as we begin this Holy Week, we come with humble hearts to worship and meditate on your love for us. We have often pushed you aside and gone our own way. Our life has been filled with our own pride. Help us to look to Christ and his humility and then look to Christ and his glory and know that he is Lord of all. In his name. Amen.
