Day 8 of Lent
March 4, 2009

I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him; stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live forever!

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him.

For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.

To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him.

Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.

Psalm 22:22-30

To think about:

The Psalmist offers us much to think about in these verses.  Verse 22 of this psalm changes the mood from a cry for deliverance to a mood of praise for the Lord.  We are being reminded that even when we feel rejected by our family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and even God, there is still a reason to praise the Lord.  Prayers to the Lord have removed suffering from this servant's family, and our Psalmist no longer feels that he is not blessed. There is no need for him to hide his face from the Lord, so he focuses on a need for public display for worship and praise.

This psalm moves from thinking about oneself and self needs into a plea for all families and all nations to worship the Lord publicly and profoundly.  The Psalmist is encouraging us to give offerings and prayers but also to publicly display our faith.  The Psalmist is also encouraging all of God's children to look beyond their own needs and their own doors to work together in sharing their love and gratitude for the Lord.

This passage of Scripture made me think about how we as congregations get comfortable with ministries that fit us like a glove.  Often we are fearful to go beyond what is "traditionally" done at our church, staying with what is familiar rather than trying new ministries or considering new ideas. Think about not only your personal commitment to visibly share your faith each day but also how your congregation visibly makes sure all who worship there are welcome and nurtured.  If you find a discrepancy, then have the courage to do something about it.

To pray:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the opportunities you give us to know and share your word.  We humbly ask that you send the Holy Spirit to be with all those who plan and lead worship so that they are ever mindful of all who worship in your house.  Help us to remember that worshipping you far exceeds the boundaries of church walls, and guide us to be models of service to you.  Help us, Lord, to be examples of our faith in all that we do, day in and day out.  Help us to remember that you are the center of all and that you stand beside each of us every hour of every day.  Lord, we pray for an awareness that, through you, we are united in one human family.  May this awareness lead to peace throughout the world. Amen.
