CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY
Dr. Audrey West, who was the keynote speaker at last spring’s Synod Assembly, will be visiting the area again from January 30-February 2 as Scholar in Residence sponsored by Lutheran Campus Ministry at Northern Michigan University and the Northern Great Lakes Synod.
During her stay, Dr. West will be making two presentations for the public and one more specifically geared to clergy. On Monday, February 1 at 7pm Dr. West will speak at NMU about what questions the Bible raises regarding care of the environment and how decisions that impact the environment are made. There is a spiritual dimension to environmental issues which has been raised locally by the Native American Tribal Community, less so other faith groups. The Judeo-Christian tradition does speak to this spiritual dimension and Dr. West will invite conversation around this topic. Representatives of other faith traditions as well as the general public will be invited to respond to Dr. West.
Biblical interpretation is at the center of many current social issues so on Tuesday, February 2 at 7pm Dr. West will speak at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming on how the Bible can be faithfully read and interpreted in ways that promote understanding and toleration of differing viewpoints rather than having it be a point of conflict.
Both of these presentations are free and are open to all.
On Tuesday February 2 from 10am to 2pm Dr. West will offer a workshop for clergy at Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette. The topic will be on “Preaching the Texts from Luke during Lent and Beyond.” Lunch will be included as part of the workshop. A donation of $15 is suggested to help cover the cost of the lunch. Pre-registration is not required but is helpful in planning the meal. For questions or to register contact Pastor Warren Geier (906-486-4351 or wlgeier@charterinternet.com)
