Letters from the Work Crew

June 16, 2001 - writer, Steve Diemer, Marinette, Wisconsin

Hello Family and Friends,

We just finished our first week in Tanzania, all is well for all of the workers here, and the people we are working with. The food is different from what we are accustomed to and the sanitary systems are something to behold.

The library building is actually progressing ahead of schedule.

Many of you know that our branch collected caps and tee shirts for the trip. in the first week we were able to give 400 away. When we left Kisarawe yesterday afternoon and bussed back to Dar es Salaam, we encountered children for the first 5 miles wearing their new hats. all of the work at the library is done with hand tools: chiseling planeing sanding hammering, sawing with hand tools. The living accommodations are very similar to Fortune Lake bible camp with downgrades in some areas. It is much nicer than we had anticipated. We had set low expectations, but have been pleasantly surprised. I spent last week building windows with an African carpenter my age. We built windows that required precise measuring and cutting with hand tools that would eventually get assembled with tongues and grooves and reinforcement bars 10 feet long were driven through the holes that had to be aligned perfectly or they would not fit. They fit. The African gentleman that I worked with was a craftsman, spoke English and Swahili, measured in metric and in the English system and did this for about 6 dollars a day. It is amazing. I hope all of you have great weeks and it is my guess that it will be another week until we can get to the Internet again. This experience has been very enlightening to our family and we will have a lot to share when we get home.

Love,
Steve
